Rudolf Steiner built up a picture of the human being as evolving through time toward an intended destiny as a wholly spiritual being participating in ongoing world-creation.  Does it matter that Steiner spoke in a language that seems to have questionable relevance for our modern scientific era?  If we could speak a common language regarding our own evolution, would we have a tool for “re-souling” the world we create?

Early-Bird Special: Conference fee reduced to $200 if registered by Sept. 20th.

About the Intention of this Conference

The Natural Science Section is inviting those having interest in anthroposophy and science to come together in discussion revolving around the question of reconciling natural science and spiritual science. Michael Judge will take up the challenge to form a plausible coherence in the languages of these two sciences as regards the epochs of evolution. He has spent decades gathering his findings and has made many presentations on the topic. We invite others also to contribute to this crucial theme of bridging natural science and spiritual science in this or other scientific fields. Perhaps you have encountered other ways people reconcile science and spirit? Additional research work brought by members and friends will be welcomed as well, as is usual for our meetings.

Send one-paragraph presentation proposals to editor@naturalsciencesection.org.

Trained in natural science and adept in esoteric science, Rudolf Steiner asserted that when Natural Science is genuine and when Spiritual Science is genuine these two sciences agree. One familiar with the terminology and narrative pictures generated by these two sciences knows that they do seem far apart indeed and to have little to do with each other. However, by way of studying phenomena and the concepts therein, one can hope to find coherence between these two sciences. Understanding and translating their vocabulary is a key to understanding this coherence. By and large, Rudolf Steiner chose to use esoteric vocabulary in his explanations. Steiner and the philosophy of Anthroposophy to be taken seriously as a force of health in the world, translation of his meaning when speaking of the “Lemurian, Atlantean and Fifth Post-Atlantean Epochs,” for example, needs expression in terms of Natural Science. Now a hundred years down the road it may be possible to translate this esoteric vocabulary into Natural Scientific vocabulary, demonstrating coherence between the two.

Over the course of the conference Michael Judge will demonstrate this through a four-part series of presentations dancing rigorously between Natural Science and Spiritual Science:

  1.  The wide evolutionary background & epistemology
  2. “Atlantean Epoch”, the mid-point in evolution
  3. “Lemurian Epoch”, the path of freedom through knowledge of good and evil, and
  4. “Fifth Post-Atlantean Epoch”, the capacity of individual choice.

These three case studies are key as there is a geological, paleontological, and archeological record to test Rudolf Steiner’s research. Steiner was an advocate of each person thinking through what is true and false. There is a need to put Steiner’s research to the test and likewise Natural Sciences assertions also.

About Michael Judge – Our presenter who will launch our conversation

Michael Judge was born in Washington DC near the Smithsonian Natural History Museum to Irish immigrant parents. He has had a keen interest in the past since being a young lad. He graduated from the University of Maryland with a BA in History where he also studied geology, anthropology, and archeology and obtained State of Maryland Teaching certificate.

Michael encountered Anthroposophy in 1978 reading Cosmic Memory by Rudolf Steiner. The precise descriptions in the book were striking yet of seeming fantastic content. There and then an urge to show the plausible coherence of evolution between Natural Science and Spiritual Science was born. It continues to this day, 46 years later.

Michael has worked as a conventional educator and as a Waldorf Teacher. He holds a Waldorf Teaching Certificate, a Spatial Dynamics Institute Certificate, and attended multiple sessions of the Rudolf Steiner Institute. He founded and coordinates the Chesapeake Bio Dynamic Network linking biodynamic endeavors in the greater Chesapeake Region.
